As long as I remember, I always dreamed of a little Yorkshire Terrier aka Yorkie. Growing up in a two bedroom apartment in Russia, my parents just wouldn’t allow us to have a dog, not even a little one. Teasingly, one of our neighbors had the most adorable little Yorkie which they would always dress up in cute coats and sweaters, and I just fell in love with her right away. I would even asked them if I can take their dog for a walk sometimes and promised myself that as soon as I grow up and live on my own, I will get myself a Yorkie dog. When I moved to California, that day finally came in November 2006, and was one of the most exciting and joyful days of my life. So I want to share all the reasons why I love this breed so much.
(Bella at 12 weeks old)
It’s no secret that Yorkies are one of the most popular and loved breeds all over the world. At first, you might fall for them because of their adorable and darling looks, but there is so much more to them than that. It’s a big personality in a tiny package.
They are unbelievably loving, playful and cheerful dogs that won’t leave your side for a minute. They are very friendly dogs and love to be in the center of admiration, but at the same time, they are very loyal to their owners. They need a lot of attention and love, and they are most comfortable on your lap, it’s a true lap dog. It’s a very active breed and love to play games, so you will never be bored again. They don’t require long walks and walk around the block can be enough, but it’s not to say that they don’t enjoy long strolls. I love taking my Yorkie for an evening walk on the beach or go hike with her in the woods where she runs free chasing squirrels and birds. They are also good swimmers, which was a big surprise for me and I find it so adorable how good she can swim in the ocean with my supervision of course.
At the same time, Yorkies can be stubborn and won’t always do what you tell them; they have their own mind. They are very smart dogs and can be very well trained if you take your time with them, but watch out and make sure that you are the one who is doing the training and not the other way around, they can be very dominating. For example, Bella “trained” us to give her treats, it was adorable at first, but now I have to remind her that she is not the boss of me 🙂
Don’t let their small size fool you. Yorkie might look like a cute little teddy bear or more like a stuffed animal, but Yorkies are very brave dogs and very protective of their owners. They are also great at being a “guard dogs” and will alarm you if someone is coming before the even at the door. I call Bella my “doorbell” since she is so good at announcing any visitors.
One of the many reasons that I love Yorkies is for their size. Bella weighs 6 pounds (2.7 kg) which allow me to bring here anywhere with me. From day one I used to take here everywhere with me: hair salons, shopping, restaurants and coffee shops, visiting my friends and even brought her to my English class once, which shocked and amused my teacher. Maybe because of the early exposure to the outside world my dog loves to travel with me, go for car rides and doesn’t mind flying on the plane (We flew with her at least ten times already).
Another great bonus to the Yorkshire Terrier is that they don’t shed which makes them perfect for people with allergies or anyone who doesn’t want to have dog hair all over their furniture. They have a beautiful coat with fine and silky human-like hair that will change color from dark brown to different shades of silver with beautiful highlights that will make any girl jealous. You can have a lot of fun and experiment with different styles of haircuts for your dog. I personally prefer shorter haircut around the body and a little bit longer on the face with the Yorkie ears. Since they don’t have an undercoat Yorkies are sensible to the cold and need to keep them warm in sweaters and jackets, which brings me to another reason I love these little dogs. I just love dressing Bella and anytime we go somewhere she usually gets a lot of compliments and needles to say she loves that!
Well I hope you enjoyed reading my little love story and maybe will fall in love with the breed as much as I do and even decide to get one, and if you have any questions, please leave me a comment, and I will be happy to answer.
